“Tropical Spice On Ice” is an adult synchronized ice skating team comprised of “dazzling” fit woman and men between the ages of 50 and 73 years.
The skaters, who originally came from Northern United States, Canada and Europe, went to a nearby skating rink to improve their fitness levels and have fun while participating in a sport they enjoyed. Many of them loved to skate as youngsters, but, for various reasons, never fulfilled their dreams to perform. Now in their adult years, they are performing, competing, and loving it!
Erika Amundsen, a world class skater and coach who was a firm believer in adult participation in ice skating, coached the group until her sudden death in November, 2005. Kelly Paige, a Learn-to-Skate specialist is now the head coach. Erika believed age should not be an impediment to involvement in this marvelous sport which combines the artistic with the athletic.
As well as producing ice shows for the enjoyment of area folks and charitable causes, the team has entered many competitions throughout Florida, and has traveled to Alabama, Texas, New England, Tennessee, California, Colorado, Lake Placid and Las Vegas NV to compete.
Each member of the team also enters individual events – Freestyle, Dance, Figures, Couples, Spotlight, Artistic and Interpretive – according to their proficiency level. All are members of the Ice Skating Institute (ISI), an industry organization that offers testing from beginning to advanced levels of skating.
All of the group’s costumes are designed and made by Mariann Baur, a team member since the inception of Tropical Spice on Ice.
Besides practicing skating many hours a week, the women lead full and productive lives. The group is comprised of mothers, grandmothers, and professional career women and men. Their activities extend beyond their skating to include, among other endeavors, fundraising and volunteering for local organizations.
The members of Tropical Spice on Ice wish to inspire other adults, men and women, to incorporate ice skating into their exercise programs. You only have to see this group once to know their skating efforts provide fun, fitness, and great camaraderie.
